Understanding THC and CBD: What Do the Numbers Mean?

Every product on a dispensary shelf lists a THC and/or CBD percentage, but what that number actually means depends on what you are looking at. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary compound responsible for cannabis's intoxicating effects, while CBD (cannabidiol) is non-intoxicating and is more associated with relaxation and anti-inflammatory effects without a "high."

For flower, a THC percentage represents the proportion of that compound by dry weight - a strain listed at 24% THC has more of the compound, gram for gram, than one listed at 16%, but that does not mean it will simply feel "50% stronger." Terpene content, your own tolerance, and consumption method all shape the actual experience just as much as the raw percentage.

For concentrates and vape cartridges, THC percentages run much higher (often 70-90%+) because the extraction process removes plant material and concentrates the cannabinoids - which is also why a small amount goes a much longer way than the same percentage would in flower.

CBD-forward products, meanwhile, are typically chosen specifically to avoid a strong high while still getting some of cannabis's other effects, and many people combine a high-CBD product with a lower-THC one deliberately to soften the psychoactive effects.

If you are newer to cannabis, starting with a lower THC percentage and going slow is almost always the better call than reaching for the highest number on the shelf.
