Edibles 101: Dosing, Onset Time, and Staying in Control

Edibles are one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis, and also the category most likely to catch new users off guard. Unlike smoking or vaping, where effects show up within minutes, edibles have to be digested and processed by the liver before they take effect - a process that can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your metabolism and whether you have eaten recently.
That delay is the source of almost every "edibles horror story": someone eats a gummy, doesn't feel anything after 20 minutes, eats another one (or three), and then gets hit with all of it at once an hour later. The fix is simple but requires discipline - start with a low dose (5-10mg of THC is a reasonable starting point for most adults), and wait at least two hours before considering more, even if you don't feel anything yet.
Edible packaging in DC, Maryland, and Virginia dispensaries is required to clearly list total THC content and the per-piece dose, so you can portion accordingly - a 100mg chocolate bar scored into 10 pieces is a 10mg dose per piece, not 100mg.
Effects from edibles also tend to last longer than smoking or vaping (often 4-8 hours), and can feel more full-body and intense at the same nominal dose. Plan your day accordingly, don't drive, and keep edibles stored well away from children and anyone who might mistake them for regular food.
